Beneath the shadow of the Brokenback Range, where warm days give way to cool nights, Samuel Vineyard is the heart of Cael's Gate.
Planted in 2022 and named in honour of Chris's late brother, Samuel, this small estate vineyard represents a deeply personal chapter in the Cael's Gate story. It is a place shaped by family, patience and a belief that exceptional wines begin long before they reach the cellar.
Today, Samuel Vineyard is dedicated exclusively to Tempranillo — a variety that has shown a natural affinity with the conditions of Broke Fordwich, producing wines with depth, structure and freshness.
Vineyard Facts
Situated at the base of the Brokenback Range, Samuel Vineyard occupies a gently sloping site in Broke Fordwich. Its well-drained soils and position within the rain shadow of the surrounding ranges create conditions well suited to Tempranillo.
Warm days encourage flavour and colour development, while cooler conditions overnight help retain freshness as the fruit ripens. Each vintage brings its own character, shaped by the season and the vineyard itself.
Samuel Vineyard was established with two carefully selected Tempranillo clones, CL306 and ENTAV 770. Their inclusion allows us to explore how different clonal material responds to the same site and contributes to the character and complexity of the finished wine.
Chosen for their complementary characteristics, they bring both power and finesse to the vineyard. One provides structure, depth and concentration, while the other contributes elegance, balance and aromatic lift. Together, they help shape a style that is distinctly Samuel Vineyard — expressive, layered and deeply connected to its Broke Fordwich home.
Every decision in Samuel Vineyard begins with the fruit. Vineyard work is undertaken by hand wherever practical, with each season guided by careful observation, thoughtful canopy management and attention to vine balance.
