Great wine begins long before it reaches the winery.
It starts in the vineyard, shaped by climate, soil, season and the countless decisions made throughout the growing year. Our role as winemakers is to understand what each parcel offers, make deliberate decisions where they matter, and preserve the character of the vineyard and vintage.
At Cael's Gate, we believe compelling wines are shaped by thoughtful decisions, attention to detail and respect for the fruit.
Every wine we produce begins with the vineyard.
While our estate Samuel Vineyard in Broke Fordwich is the foundation of our Tempranillo program, we also work with carefully selected growers and vineyards across New South Wales. Rather than beginning with a region and asking what we should make, we look for sites where variety, climate and vineyard come together in a way that excites us. Each vineyard is chosen for what it can bring to the wine — its character, structure and individual expression. The result is a collection shaped by different places, but united by a common philosophy: the vineyard comes first.
Our approach in the winery is hands-on where it matters and restrained where it doesn’t.
Every decision — from fermentation and extraction through to maturation and blending — is made in response to the fruit in front of us. We are not interested in imposing a formula across every wine or every vintage. Instead, we intervene with purpose, preserving varietal character, balance and the individual expression of each vineyard and season.
We produce our wines in small quantities, allowing us to work closely with each parcel from harvest through to bottling.
This scale provides flexibility, precision and the ability to make decisions based on quality rather than volume. Working in small batches allows us to respond to individual parcels rather than treating every component the same.
We believe great wines should speak clearly of variety, vineyard and season.
Whether the fruit comes from our own vineyard in Broke Fordwich or from one of the growers we work with elsewhere in New South Wales, our objective remains the same: to understand what that particular site and vintage have given us, and to make decisions that allow those qualities to remain visible in the finished wine.
Samuel Vineyard
Planted in 2022 and named in honour of Chris's late brother, Samuel Vineyard represents the most personal chapter in our winemaking journey. Located in Broke Fordwich beneath the Brokenback Range, the vineyard is dedicated to Tempranillo — a variety whose character continues to reveal itself with each passing vintage. For us, Samuel Vineyard is more than a source of fruit. It is a long-term commitment to place, family and the pursuit of wines that truly belong to their environment.
The Pursuit of Better
Winemaking is a craft that rewards curiosity. Every vintage presents new lessons, new challenges and new opportunities to improve. That continual pursuit of understanding — the same curiosity that inspired Chris to make his first batch of wine in a Sydney garage in 2016 — remains at the heart of everything we do today. The pursuit is never finished. Every vintage gives us another opportunity to learn, refine and make better wine.
